will deliver a national collaborative Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) online platform that will support a collective understanding of what SuDS are, how SuDS work, and the benefits they provide. The platform will accelerate efficiencies in partnership working, and the consideration and implementation of environmentally beneficial drainage solutions.

SuDS-iQ will build on the SuDS performance evaluation tool developed by HR Wallingford (funded by UKRI Innovate UK) as part of the European project StopUP (funded by European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation program).

The project runs from February 2025 to December 2026.

What will SuDS-iQ deliver?

SuDS-iQ will be an easy-to-use accessible evaluation tool that will support the design of SuDS to prevent runoff from entering sewerage networks and to protect waterbodies from erosion, flood risk and pollution.

The tool will use present day and future rainfall time-series, as well as design storms, to quantify SuDS benefits.

The key features of SuDS-iQ:

  • Shared collaborative platform for partnership projects
  • Interactive learning environment
  • SuDS evaluation tools for assessing schemes against standards and regulatory requirements
  • Performance metrics focussed on resilience, including demonstration of water-resource savings and pollution reduction
  • Decision support for option appraisal
  • Asset definition tool to capture, save and share SuDS asset data consistently
  • SuDS scheme costs and carbon estimator
  • SuDS performance monitoring data portal
  • Innovative mechanism to improve representation of SuDS performance in water company models
